JNTUCE ANANTAPUR – PAST TO PRESENT

JNTU College of Engineering, Anantapur stands alot on a solid foundation of past glory and prestige. This college was started in the year 1946, under the post war reconstruction programme and functioned as Guindy Campus, Madras for two years and was shifted to Anantapur in 1948. It was in the year 1958 the college was shifted to the present permanent building.

During the first 25 years of its existence, it was affiliated to the Madras and S.V. Universaties and produced distinguished alumni, who are holding high positions in India and Abroad. In the year 1972, Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University was formed and college became a constituent college of the university. With this a new era was ushered in the technical education. Consequently there was an impetus to the academic activity of this college. Though the college was initially established to provide basic technical education, with the passage of time, it emerged out as one of the leading Engineering Colleges in the country. The main objective of the college is to fulfill the technological need of the fast developing India with highly professional and well trained graduates, Post graduates and researchers.

During the last 75 years of its existence, the institution has carved a niche in the field of Technical education. The college is spread on a sprawling 200 acres with various departments and labs housed in nearly 25 buildings with a built up area of 5,10,000 Sq ft. The college has a qualified team of faculty with a right blend of experienced and dynamic young members. The college has all the facilities to impart and train the students in both co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. The students of this college are second to none as far as the technical competence is concerned. At present the college offers 6 undergraduate and 14 post graduate programmes in addition to encouraging active research in the latest topics of community oriented and need based technological aspects.

Starting in humble dwelling in 1948 in the old campus this college grew up gradually brick by brick to the present level. The growth was gradual with sporadic activities of building construction. But very little could be done till 1990’s in spite of the need for development. During the last decade there is a surge in the development activities, particularly in Civil constructions. During this period new locks for Mechanical, Computer Science, Chemical, Civil, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering were completed and are functional. In addition to this two hostel blocks viz Ellora for boys and Shilpa for girls came up facilitating comfortable accommodation to all the students.

Amenities like Guest House Dispensary, Gym were constructed. In the Diamond Jubilee year new facilities like Bank building, Post Office, Canteen, Staff Quarters and Engineering Cell have been added to the existing infrastructure. The construction activity of Digital library and Auditorium is in full swing and these buildings will be ready very soon.

Efforts are on to improve the greenery in the campus and department of social forestry has taken up plantation in the premises in a large scale.

About 8000 saplings are already planted and number has to improve considerably in future. Needless to say any educational institution is not made up of brick and cement only. With a lot of building area at the disposal, there was not enough equipment and furniture to occupy. Most of the equipment available in the laboratories was old and modernization and removal of obsolescence was the need of the hour. The dedicated faculty of this college rose to the occasion and managed to get lot of funds sanctioned from central funding agencies like UGC, AICTE, DST etc for the research and MODROBS Projects.

As a result the departments could acquire state of the art equipment to their laboratories. This has augmented research activity in the college. In the last three years the faculties of the college have published 200 technical papers in national and international journals / conferences. Many National conferences and workshops have been organized in the Diamond Jubilee year both at students and faculty levels and the response to these events from all over the country was tremendous. With the meticulous planning, hard work and optimistic approach of the former Vice-Chancellor Dr. K. Rajagopal, the then principal of the college, the college has been identified as beneficiary institute under world Bank sponsored ” Technical Education Quality Improvement Program” of central govt. Under this, the college received a grant of Rs 12 crore. The funds obtained were used to procure latest equipment and software in all the departments. The campus networking of computers is already over and the staff and students now have unlimited internet connectivity. Towards the end of the 2007-2008 it is proposed to develop the institution at par with any leading technical education institution in India and promote research in cutting edge technologies and generate revenue through consultancy. Further, it is aimed at producing quality technocrats who can cater to the needs of the industry and society.

Over the years the institute could establish firm contacts with the industry and efforts were made to arrange campus interview programs. Majority of the students are being placed in National / Multi-National companies. Our students could get placed in reputed software companies like IBM, CTS, CMC, Accenture, wipro etc. The placement cell of the college is very active and we are making efforts to ensure 100% placement to our students. One of the objectives of this college is to sensitize the students towards the needs and aspirations of the society. The NSS unit of the college is doing an excellent job in motivating and orienting the students towards service activities. The NSS unit is taking up social service activities like health and hygiene, blood donation, tree plantation etc.

This college is also functioning as nodal center involving in the activities of conducting University examinations, spot valuations etc for 44 private engineering colleges of this region, which are affiliated to JNTU University.
